V’stars, how would you use ten dollars to make someone’s day?
Starting today, Canadian credit union Servus is handing out CDN 200,000 in ten-dollar bills, giving 20,000 people the opportunity to create a Feel Good Ripple by giving that money to someone else. Servus is asking customers “How will you use ten dollars to make someone’s day?” Suggestions include ‘buy flowers for the grocery store cashier’, ‘buy the coffee for the person behind you in line at the drive-thru’ and ‘give $10 to a homeless shelter to pay for lunch or dinner supplies’. By pledging CDN 200,00 to the effort, the company hopes to start a ‘ kindness movement’ that will positively affect at least 20,000 people.
Servus is distributing the bills through its branches throughout Alberta, and asking participants to write up stories of their kindness—monetary or otherwise—on feelgoodripple.ca. By sharing their experience online or at a branch, participants have a chance to win one of ten CDN 500 donations to a charity of their choice. While the contest will end on December 1st, Servus hopes the Feel Good Ripple will continue long afterwards.
This type of sponsored charity—actively seeking customers’ collaboration—is meant to underline the cooperative mindset of credit unions (as opposed to, say, banks). It’s a prime example of a company applying the principles of Generation G, as our sister-site trendwatching.com calls the societal and business shift to a more generous mindset. Thats just downright kind and awesome. I think I’d give 10$ to my mother and tell her to go grab some coffee or enjoy a meal by herself while I took care of the kids and did the house cleaning. Give her some time alone and such.
aww that’s really sweet.
what’s stopping you from doing that every week? or everyday?
i would give this money to homeless guy in my neighborhood. Actually here is only one homeless and sometimes when i see him im thinking about giving him like 2-3 dollars for something lets say in taco bell.
I would buy him a dinner and give it to him.
whenever my friends and i are walking down the street with our packed leftovers from dinner, we’ll offer it to the homeless person. he or she will appreciate it much more than we will.
buying dinner is a great gesture.
Wow. That’s a fantastic program.
I remember pulling up behind about 5 trucks at a stoplight. The light was red. A homeless guy walked up, barely able to stand, with a please help sign. The light still red, all the trucks sped off I’m assuming to not look at the guy.
Fuck, I felt bad.
I stopped by him and handed the guy about 10 bucks and some gummy bear treats I had in my pocket.
“Man, you gotta be kidding me. Thank you so much.”
I have a pretty good radar for people just feeding you BS stories for drug money by now…
That moment moved me. I hope he’s doing well.
Well, I’m out of WI so I can’t spend any Canada cash on people. But I do like the idea and would not mind putting tax money into kindness.
Peace
that’s pretty awesome.

i’m sure it made you feel really good.
yeah, this canadian credit union is pretty snazzy for doing this!

dude, i was just as humble as you when i gave money to the first bum in my entire life, then as the yrz go by, i notice i was just feeding their addiction to alcohol & drugz! my philosphy is simple, if you can stand there in the blazing heat with a plz help ninjaz killed my family sign, you can pick fruitz & vegatable at uncle bobz farm for enough money to stay alive! my parentz came to america with nothing but the cloth on their backz, if they can make it, these bumz need to try alittle bit harder!
This is a tough one, ten dollars isn’t much…. but I think I would give it to the mother or father of a child in need. Money for a warm hat or mittens perhaps, but then again maybe something that would let the kid have some fun like a stuffed animal or a bunch of junk food. Practical or fun, maybe fun, just this once.
Hi,
I would donate it to this site because it would last longer than a meal and it seems like it would be a good thing.http://www.stuffedanimalsforemergencies.org/
